What you are missing mustangmike is that the 23rd is one of the most consistent Republican strongholds in the nation (some parts of the 23rd have not elected a Democratic representative since the 1850s.) So if Owens manages to win, despite (or because of,) an extreme conservative campaign with support from all of the Republican heavy hitters, then a lot of people in and outside of the party are going to be wondering what the hell just happened. The teabaggers may have won a couple of big elections, but if they can't defend their home turf then I'm not sure I would call that 'building momentum.'

Lasers aren't a perfectly tight beam so at longer distances they diverge. It's not hard to think a beam at 2000ft would be large enough to fill the entire field of view for a pilot as well it bounces readily. So a tiny dot at 50ft becoems a massive beam at 2000ft which can reflect off objects at fairly high intensities..?
I did this in college. It really didn't pay a lot, but was good for beer money. Getting hard is really not an issue, as that's not what you're thinking about and it's damn cold in most art studios. Plus, the situation is not exactly a turn on. The biggest thing on your mind, especially during long poses (like 1 hour +), is that cramp in your calf or back. I'm surprised this merited an article in the Times. Where did they think art models came from?

People have children intentionally for the government support. I was walking to the store one day and over heard a conversation between two young lower class mothers. One who was pregnant tells the other something along the lines that her second kid will get her an extra "X" amount of money per month from the government. This was Jersey City NJ. Some what of a ghetto in parts.
