The problem is, they're going to piss off a lot more legitimate-to-mostly-legitimate users than pure pirates. The people who pirate and never buy anything are in the vast minority. Many studies have shown that people who download stuff illegally also spend more on that same stuff than those who don't. It may sound counter-intuitive, but think of it in the inverse: People who buy the most stuff (i.e. fans) are also interested in expanding their horizons or checking things out before buying, thus, they download more stuff. If you cut off those latter people, you're killing your own devoted market base.

That's true except people are saying the beam scatters too much at distance - no matter how you zoom the lens of a camera is just a few inches wide and it's easily able to overcome the sensor, which fives you some idea what the strength would be hitting a human eye.
